Jesus Said This Warning Nearly 2,000 Years Ago—Most Christians Ignore It Until It’s Too Late

What if Jesus Christ returned tonight? In one of His most urgent teachings in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus gave a sobering command that every believer needs to hear: “Therefore you also be ready.” This devotional explores what it truly means to live prepared for Christ’s sudden return, and asks the heart-searching questions that could change your life forever.

One of the most serious warnings Jesus ever gave is often overlooked. It was not directed only to His disciples, but to everyone who claims to follow Him. After describing signs that would precede the end of the age, Jesus said with unmistakable clarity:

“Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.”
— Matthew 24:42 (NKJV)

Then He added:

“Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
— Matthew 24:44 (NKJV)

These words are both comforting and deeply convicting. Jesus did not tell His followers to predict the exact date of His return. He told them to be spiritually prepared every single day.

Imagine hearing a knock at your door and finding the Lord Jesus standing before you. Would your heart be filled with peace and joy, or would there be things you wish you had surrendered to Him? This is the question Christ places before every believer.

Jesus promised that He will return. After His ascension, angels declared in the Acts of the Apostles:

“This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”
— Acts 1:11 (NKJV)

His return is certain. The timing is not. Jesus said:

“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.”
— Matthew 24:36 (NKJV)

Because we do not know when He will come, readiness must become a way of life.

Being ready does not mean living in fear. It means walking closely with God. It means praying consistently, studying Scripture, confessing sin quickly, forgiving others, and faithfully carrying out the work He has entrusted to us. Jesus said:

“Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing.”
— Matthew 24:46 (NKJV)

The Lord wants to find His people faithfully serving, loving, and obeying Him.

In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus used another powerful image:

“Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning.”
— Luke 12:35 (NKJV)

This picture speaks of alertness and expectancy. Spiritually speaking, our lamps should be burning brightly with faith, devotion, and hope.

The Apostle Paul described Christ’s return as:

“The blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”
— Titus 2:13 (NKJV)

For those who love Jesus, His return is not a threat but a glorious hope.

Questions to Examine Your Heart

  • If Jesus returned today, would I be ready to meet Him?

  • Is there any unconfessed sin in my life?

  • Am I faithfully obeying God’s Word?

  • Have I allowed distractions to dull my spiritual alertness?

  • Do I long for Christ’s return, or am I too attached to this world?

A Practical Illustration

When preparing for a journey, we pack in advance and make sure everything is in order. We do not wait until the last second. In the same way, spiritual readiness begins today—not tomorrow.

Final Encouragement

Jesus’ warning is also an invitation. He calls us to live each day with hearts surrendered to Him. His return will be sudden, but it should never catch His followers unprepared.

Take time today to pray, repent, and renew your commitment to Christ.

“Therefore you also be ready.”
— Matthew 24:44 (NKJV)

Jesus is coming again. The only question is this: Will you be ready?
